The National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) held their annual meeting in Sacramento, CA, in early April. The keynote symposium at the event focused on animal agriculture and biofuels production. Speakers included Bill Jones, CEO of Pacific Ethanol, the largest ethanol producer on the West Coast; Steve Meyer with Paragon Economics in Des Moines, IA, who provides frank comments about the political side of ethanol; and Gavin Meerdink, a professor at the University of Illinois, who shares some of the considerations in feeding ethanol coproducts.
A second symposium was titled “Impacts of Animal Production Safety Practices on the Food Supply. John Clifford with USDA-APHIS and Robert Brackett with FDA both offer remarks on the state of the U.S.’s animal ID efforts and on-going efforts to help combat E.coli outbreaks, respectively.
Audio files from the speakers at the event are included below. If you don’t have time to listen to them all, those of particular note are the remarks made by Steve Meyer on the ethanol topic; and Dr. Clifford regarding animal ID. All audio interviews are 96 kpbs mp3 files and can be downloaded from the link.
