Abanda, AL
My name is Rick Whelan, I am 46 years old, and live in Dallas, GA. I am an equipment operator for a utility company.
I have an amazingly supportive family. My wife of 20 years, Lisa, is a schoolteacher. My son Austin, 19, is a college student, and my daughter Kimberly is a high school sophomore.
In 2003, we purchased 75 acres of farmland in Abanda, AL. The property was overgrown, with some timber. I have cleared the land for pastures. With the help of the NRCS EQIP Program, I have built cross fencing for rotational grazing, watering pads and hay pads, and have planted MAX Q pastures. We built a 60x72 working barn and a hay barn.
Since an early age, I have always wanted to be an American Cowman. In the last 10 years, the desire grew, and within the last 4 years, my goals are coming true. Working with the livestock, the land, and other cattlemen, has brought new meaning to my life. It allows me the independence to do what I want to do.

My cattle operation consists of registered Angus and registered SimAngus. I currently have 42 head, including calves. I plan to purchase 20 registered SimAngus in November. I am working hard to raise premium to Choice steers that will perform in the feedlot. In addition, I am raising quality replacement heifers that will produce quality calves for other farmers.
The support of Gibbs Farms, Ranburne, AL, has been instrumental in my success thus far.
