Jul 30, 2007 1:51 PM

Gary and Nancy Maurer capped their 23 years as state advisors by being named Advisors of the Year at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) July 13 in Denver.

The Maurers, Independence, Iowa, have been active in the Iowa Junior Hereford Association for decades. 1n 1996, the Polled Hereford Junior National was in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Maurers played an integral role in organizing that event. They canvassed the state seeking donations for the show and helped with almost every aspect to ensure the event would be a great success.

Since then, Gary and Nancy have driven a semi hauling cattle from Iowa to JNHEs in Michigan, Montana and Texas. In other years they have coordinated all the youth’s transportation so that juniors could travel together. When the polled and horned associations merged, Gary and Nancy worked to help the youth mingle and become one organization.

Every year they work with the Iowa Junior Hereford board of directors to organize the state junior show. They do everything from taking entries, to making programs, to getting out in the community raising money for awards.

The Maurers are also active in other community organizations. They both have served as 4-H leaders. Gary has been a member of the county Extension council, the county 4-H youth committee, the fair board and the school board.

Gary is also active in the Iowa Polled Hereford Association. He has served as president, treasurer, sale manager and on various committees through the years. Nancy has been the queen chairman, and president and treasurer of the Iowa Poll-ettes. She was honored in 1991 as National Poll-ette of the Year. Gary and Nancy were inducted into the Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame in 2004. Gary was also named Iowa’s Outstanding Member by the American Polled Hereford Association. They will be retiring from their position as state advisors this year.
