Denver Hereford Show Sets Strong Pace for 2008

“An absolutely amazing set of cattle” vied for national champion honors at the 2008 National Hereford Show in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) according to judge, Charlie Boyd Jr., Mays Lick, Ky. Prior to selecting the champion females, Boyd complimented Hereford exhibitors saying, “This is the most powerful set of females I have had the privilege to judge.”
He went on to say in his closing comments of the bull show, “The Hereford breed has made more progress than any breed in the last five years and should not take the back seat to anyone.”
The history making Hereford event at the NWSS boasts the most cattle of any breed being exhibited, the highest averaging sale and top-selling bull valued at $245,000. There were more than 603 Herefords competing at the 102st NWSS, including 431 entries on the Hill in the open and junior shows and seven loads and 34 pens in the Yards.
The Hereford activities got underway with Cody Lowderman, Macomb, Ill., judging the 67-head junior show on Jan. 16. Pen and carload competition followed on Jan. 17, with a pen of three female show debuting in the Yards. Herefords filled the Stadium Arena on the Hill with the open females showing on Jan. 18 and the bulls on Jan. 19.
STAR KKH SSF Valedictorian ET, bred and owned by Kasey Herman, Skiatook, Okla., and partners Star Lake Cattle Ranch, Skiatook, Okla., and Heritage Cattle Co., Buhl, Idaho, captured the coveted supreme champion trophy after winning the grand champion polled female title. The supreme award is sponsored by Four L Hereford Farm, Atwood, Tenn., and is awarded in memory of Tom Lane Sr. The STAR Bright Future 533P daughter posted an impressive set of expected progeny differences (EPDs) on show day including birth weight (BW) 5.2; weaning weight (WW) 40; yearling weight (YW) 67; milk (MM) 16; and milk and growth (M&G) 36.
H Easy Deal 609 ET by BR DM Channing ET was slapped national champion polled bull for owners: Lee and Diane Hutchens Family Trust, Fallon, Nev.; Hoffman Herefords, McArthur, Calif.; and Joe Brazil, Turlock, Calif. The yearling bull weighed 2,095 lbs., had a weight per day of age (WDA) of 2.92, a scrotal circumference (SC) of 45 cm and showed with EPDs of BW 4.0; WW 52; YW 91; MM 50; and M&G 25. Prior to winning Denver, Easy Deal was slapped champion in Fort Worth as a calf and at the Western Nugget in Reno.
BR CSF Wallace 7055 ET made history when he was named reserve national champion polled bull after topping the record breaking 2008 Mile High Night Sale when the gavel fell for $122,500 for ˝ interest. Joining owners, Don Moler, Cheyenne, Okla., and Cottonwood Springs, Cedar, Mich., and purchasing a syndicate share of the spring champion calf were Niedermeyer Farms, Cook, Neb.; DeShazer Cattle Co., Hearne, Texas; Mimms Farms, Lorenzo, Texas; Burns Farms and David and Beth Burns, Pikeville, Tenn.; Lowderman Cattle Co., Macomb, Ill.; Guyer Cattle Co. and Miller Bros., West York, Ill.; and a host of semen share holders. Wallace weighed 1,120 lbs., had a WDA of 3.57, a SC of 38 cm and showed with EPDs of BW 2.6; WW 48; YW 82; MM 16; and M&G 40.
In the horned bull show, spring calf champion, KT John Wayne 7167, by KT 122L Online 3074 outshined the competition when he was selected grand champion. He weighed 1,230 lbs., had a WDA of 3.86, a SC of 41 cm and showed with EPDs of BW 3.6; WW 72; YW 118; MM 22; and M&G 58. John Wayne is owned by Kurt Thomas, Gold Creek, Mont., and DeanaJak Farm, Inc., New Enterprise, Pa. Showing his way to the reserve national champion honors in the horned bull show was C Reno 6142 ET owned by Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, and Aaron Wilbourne, Tulare, Calif. The BR Moler son weighed 1,990 lbs., and calculated a WDA of 2.88 and a SC of 41 cm. He posted EPDs of BW 4.4; WW 54; YW 92; MM 24; and M&G 50.
C Ms Moler 6214 ET, also sired by the popular BR Moler ET, claimed the purple banner in the horned female show after winning the fall heifer calf division for National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) member, Taylor Schrick, Sayre, Okla. The heifer posted EPDs of BW 4.3; WW 54; YW 92; MM 24; and M&G 50 and was bred by Colyer Herefords who was named the premier breeder of the horned show following the two-day event. Following her and winning the reserve horned female banner was Brett Gagnon, Adin, Calif., with H Paula 625 ET by BR DM Channing ET. The junior yearling female is the reigning 2007 Junior National Hereford Expo winner and showed with EPDS of BW 4.0; WW 52; YW 91; MM 25; and M&G 50. She was bred by Hoffman Herefords.
Reserve grand champion polled female accolades went to Kelsey Repenning, Mitchell, S.D., with her junior yearling heifer, MSU Keepsake 14S by BR Moler ET. Keepsake showed with EPDs of BW 3.5; WW 50; YW 86; MM 18; and M&G 43 and was bred by Michigan State University, E. Lansing, Mich. Earlier this fall, she was named reserve champion at the American Royal.
DM BR Terri 646 ET by BR Moler ET was named grand champion in the polled female junior show for her owner Rylee Barber. Kagney Collins, Flanagan, Ill., led Purple CMCC Paris 19S ET to the top of the horned junior show. She is a SHF Interstate 20X D03 daughter and was bred by Purple Reign Cattle Co., Toulon, Ill., who later won the premier exhibitor award in the open show.
Star Lake Cattle Ranch, who exhibited the supreme female and numerous division winners secured the polled premier exhibitor honor and Four L Hereford Farm, Atwood, Tenn., was named the horned premier exhibitor and showed the best six head.
