Red Angus Association plans 2008 convention in Cheyenne

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) is holding its 54th National Convention September 17th n 19th, 2008 at the Little America Hotel in Cheyenne, WY. This annual event draws Red Angus seedstock producers, commercial customers and advocates of the breed from across the country as well as Canada and several other foreign countries.

This year’s event features a Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium to be held from 1:00 to 5:00pm on Wednesday the 17th. The key topic of the symposium will be cowherd efficiency and the importance of selecting for genetics to help lower the maintenance requirements of cattle throughout the cattle cycle. Industry experts including Dr. Denny Crews of the Canada Research Center in Lethbridge, Dr. Tom Jenkins from the Meat Animal Research Center, Dr. Mark Enns of Colorado State University and head of the Beef Improvement Federation’s committee on feed efficiency, Dr. Merlyn Nielson of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln who has multi-generational research on feed efficiency and Dr. Barry Dunn of the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management who has developed a cow/calf management and cost structure to evaluate profit in the beef business.

Thursday, September 18, and Friday, September 19, are the general session portion of the Convention, featuring year end reports, election of officers, plans for the direction of the breed and the chance for the general membership to interact with their elected representatives and RAAA staff. Following the Convention on Saturday the 20th is the chance for attendees to visit several ranches in the area that are holding open houses and hosting tours of their operations.
