Rural Women’s Conference is Sept. 14-15 in Spearfish, SD

The 2007 Rural Women’s Conference is set for Sept. 14-15 at the Spearfish Holiday Inn & Convention Center. The event will kick-off Sept. 14 with a keynote panel session on “taking charge of tomorrow” that deals with the experiences of rural women and how they persevered through tough times. Friday’s 11 a.m. session will look at biosecurity on the ranch with Clint Peck, director of Montana Beef Quality Assurance.

After lunch and round table discussions, Friday afternoon will offer a choice of breakout sessions. South Dakota State University Extension Veterinarian Russ Daly will deal with vaccines and other animal health issues. SDSU Extension Educator Heather Gessner will discuss family meetings as the first step in successful farm transitions. Kari Underly of the NCBA Beef & Veal Culinary Center will lead a session about culinary cooking. Patsy Reimche of the Ethanol Producers and Consumers in Montana will discuss ethanol basics.

During Saturday’s sessions, speaker Sid Goss of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will discuss differences among the four generations currently working together in America. Also, SDSU Extension Range Management Specialist Roger Gates will discuss strategic planning for producers, including use of the Balanced Scorecard. SDSU Extension Educator Lori Tangen covers emergency preparedness. SDSU Extension Community Leadership Development Specialist Kari Fruechte leads a session on mentoring and leadership.

The event is organized by South Dakota Women in Agriculture, which has details at its Web site, sdwia.org/. The cost is $75 for the two-day conference for those registering by Sept. 1, or $100 after Sept. 1. Women have the option of paying $40 to attend only one day of the conference if they register by Sept. 1, or $55 after Sept. 1
