The U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency has approved StandGuard Pour-on for fast-acting, continuous control of horn flies and lice in beef cattle of all ages. Its activeingredient is gamma-cyhalothrin, the newest technology in the pyrethroid class of insecticides.
In addition to demonstrating this new pour-on’s effectiveness through research, Elanco Animal Health is introducingStandGuard with a satisfaction guarantee, providing added reassurance forcattle producers.
“StandGuard Pour-on is the most potent pyrethroid available today, which means that producers will see horn fly and lice control at a low application rate,” says Richard Hack, technical consultant, Elanco.
Horn flies are the No. 1 pest in U.S. pasture cattle. Research has shown that weight-gain reduction caused by horn flies can be significant, with stocker gains decreased by 15 to 50 pounds, calf-weaning weights by 10 to 50 pounds, and milk production in pastured cows by as much as 20 percent.
To achieve the best results and return on their investment, producers should integrate StandGuard Pour-on into an integrated pest-management system that includes rotation of insecticide classes, Hack suggests.
StandGuard Pour-on is available in convenient, squeeze-and-pour 900 mL (30 ounce) bottles. Each bottle can treat 90 head that weigh 600 pounds or less, or 60 cattle that are more than 600 pounds. The low-volume dose levels translate to economical horn fly and lice control, with typical treatment costs less than 40 cents per head for calves weighing up to 600 pounds, and less than 60 cents per head for cattle above that weight limit.Subscribe to American Cowman Update e-newsletter!
